Sweeter in the distance

It is a very pretty beach, I’ll concede that much. Islands faded from distance block the horizon-line, and the sea gleams by my fingertips.

A school of slender grey fish are blinking in and out of sight, barely a metre away. But the water laps coldness at my lower ribs, sharp and refusing to fade. We’ve been quite betrayed by the bright sun overhead; this is hardly summery.
