Eugène Isabey

This week’s painting spotlight is Eugene Isabey‘s Departure of Elisabeth of France for Spain, c. 1858. I can’t get over the flow of this work – the way the eye is drawn down the white cloud, across the pale arms and faces to rest on Elisabeth’s wide ruff; the visible swish of that little pageboy’s cloak; the tension and pressure in that swathe of people. Also, red is my favourite colour.

I could definitely do without the flower-bearing cupids, though.
